Let us travel back to Egypt in the late 1950s, to the vibrant musical world of Alexandria and Cairo, where the melodies of Mohamed Fawzi were helping shape a distinctly modern Egyptian sound. Among Fawziโs fascinating instrumental works is โFatafit El Sokkarโ (ูุชุงููุช ุงูุณูุฑ) โ a composition without lyrics or a singer, allowing melody, rhythm and orchestral color to speak entirely on their own. Mohamed Fawzi was one of Egyptโs most important composers, singers and film personalities. His work extended far beyond popular songs, and Fatafit El Sokkar reveals another side of his musical imagination: the ability to create a memorable piece without relying on words or a vocalist.
The composition has remained part of Egyptโs musical heritage, with later performances and recordings preserving Fawziโs melody for new generations. Yet the particular recording presented here belongs to a much earlier chapter of its history. This 1959 recording on Philips with Mohamed Fawzi ‘s instrumental is especially intriguing because, despite extensive searches through YouTube, Discogs and other online music sources, we have been unable to locate a clearly identified digital copy of this specific historical performance.
The composition itself can still be found in later recordings, but this early version appears to have a remarkably scarce digital presence. That makes this little shellac record a fascinating musical time capsule โ preserving a particular interpretation of Fawziโs composition from the era in which this music was first circulating.
